Valley in line for another multiplex

Herald Journal, 12 March 2006

Summary:

On 9 March 2006, the city planning commission approved plans for the University Stadium 6 Theatres, a six-screen, 1,300-seat movie theater that will replace the nearby Cache Valley 3 and the Cinema 3 downtown. Westates Theatres hopes to open the 26,000-square-foot theater complex for Thanksgiving 2006.

Tony Rudman, whose family owns Westates Theatres, 'acknowledged the new multiplex is more a testament to his love of the region than satisfying consumer demand.'

Rudman said, "I think there probably are too many theaters. Economically, it might not be the brightest decision in the world, but we're excited about bringing more quality theaters to Logan."

Last March, Rudman announced his intention to build a three-screen theater and restaurant on the southwest corner of the “county block” bordered by 100 North, 100 West, 200 North and Main Street. The project became less viable after the lost of a planned convention center behind The Copper Mill Restaurant. Downtown also lacks parking and nightlife. Under the plan, the city would have bought the Cinema 3 for $600,000 and then demolished it to create a pedestrian connection between the “county block” and other downtown locations.
