Downtown S.L., Clearfield lose movie houses

Deseret News, 15 June 2000, page D7

Summary:

The Crossroads Cinemas closed after final showings on Saturday, 17 June 2000.

The Ideal Theater closed about 1998 because of a lack of profitability . It was demolished before 15 June 2000.

In 1976, Howard Coleman created the Lakeside Theaters by remodeling an existing building. The theater originally showed first-run films, but switched to sub-run in about 1985. The theater closed on 9 June 2000 because of "declining attendance and competition from the chain movie theaters" with stadium seating and digital sound. The building, owned by Kier Corp., was likely to be converted to retail.

The 4-screen Motor-Vu Drive-In opened in 1947 and is owned by Howard Coleman. Business at the drive-in went up after the North Star Drive-In closed. The theater draws patrons from as far away as Evanston, Wyo. and southern Idaho.
