The long-awaited removal of the scaffolding in front of the Casino Star Theatre in Gunnison has finally come to pass. On Friday, November 5, at 6:00 p.m., a magical “Light On!” ceremony will reveal a feature of the façade that no one has seen for 80 years. This event is free to everyone.
Just before the opening of Secretariat, Carol Andersen, former resident of the apartment above the theatre, and State Representative Kay McIff will flip the switch, lighting up the 200+ rosettes illuminating the restoration.
Carol is the daughter-in-law of C.E. Andersen, who owned the theatre from 1941 to 1974. She not only lived upstairs, but she also delivered two of her children in those rooms. Rep. McIff’s grandfather, Otto McIff, managed and operated the theatre in the 1940s. McIff was also instrumental in acquiring $100,000 in State funding to re-open the theatre after the Top Stop gas leak.
After remarks inside the Casino Star at 6:00 p.m., patrons will gather across the street for refreshments and “The Light Show”! Everyone is invited to attend and to bring $10 to “own” one of the 200 light bulbs! If you can't attend, you may donate through the website at www.casinostartheatre.com.
The regular movie will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Coming up on November 18—at midnight!—the new Harry Potter movie will light up the screen for a two-week run. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, November 11. On Friday, December 3, Lark & Spur, an Excellence in the Community Concert, will greet the holiday season with a live program of Christmas songs from around the world.
The Casino Star Theatre, your hometown national treasure, wants to be your first choice for excellence in live and film entertainment—and your first choice in historic preservation.
