Tow Mater, hero of Disney’s new movie CARS 2, was lead story on KSL-TV5’s local news Thursday night. Really. Reporter Sam Penrod paid a visit to Gunnison for more serious news, but found this old rust bucket slouching on the curb in front of the Casino Star Theatre.
Pedestrian traffic has burgeoned on Main Street since Mater appeared. All day, children bring their parents to poke, prod, and pose for photo-ops. A couple from Alaska—just driving through, they thought—make a U-turn to come back and look. They also enjoyed a tour of the restoration-in-progress historic building with director Diana Spencer, who was taking photos for the news.
Seth Hendrickson, a projector for the Casino Star Theatre, brought the wreck out of hiding, applied some cosmetic surgery, and positioned it on the curb last week to celebrate the opening of CARS 2. He plans to “drive” it in the July Fourth parade in Gunnison on Saturday, then return it to the theatre at least through July 7.
There’s still time for you to bring your kids for snapshots and to enjoy this hot new PIXAR movie in a beautiful historic theatre on Main Street in Gunnison, Utah.
