'Beauty' to Help Handicapped
Salt Lake Tribune, 18 May 1959, page E1
Nine top performers in the operatic, television, musical-comedy and night club field provide the off-screen voices for the animated characters in Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty."
And on June 3 at 8:30 p.m. at the Villa Theater, during The Salt Lake Tribune-Salt Lake Valley Kiwanis Clubs sponsored benefit premiere, all nine performers will be speaking for the aid of handicapped children in Utah.
Scholarship Fund
Funds gained in the premiere will be used to establish a scholarship fund to train the special teachers needed to instruct physically handicapped, mentally retarded and other handicapped children.
That fund will be administered by the Salt Lake Exceptional Children Parent-Teacher Assn.
The six million dollar fairy tale, filmed in Technirama 70, Technicolor and six channel stereophonic sound, is the result of 20 years of planning and six years of production by Mr. Disney.
Costa and Shirley
Voices of the romantic lead, Princess Aurora and Prince Philip, are spoken respectively by TV, night club and operatic star, Mary Costa, and motion picture and Broadway musical-comedy star, Bill Shirley.
Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy, Taylor Holmes, Bill Thompson and Candy Candido essay the vocal performances for such characters as the evil witch, Maleficent; the three good faires, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, and the jovial Kings Stefan and Hubert.
