The West Jordan City Council voted Wednesday to sell the Sugar Factory. Part of the $750,000 from the sale will be used to demolish the factory and outbuildings, except for two landmark storage silos. Demolition could be complete by the end of the year. The council is working on a master plan for a cultural arts facility using $195,000 in residential development impact fees.
The city has been collecting public input for several months and the council believes most residents will be happy with their fiscally responsible decision. Mayor Johnson said she would rather have people entering the city see an empty field than decrepit buildings.
Preservationists say they were blindsided by the "sneaky" and "cowardly" decision because the agenda made no mention of the buildings.
