'Fantasia' returns
Deseret News, 21 October 1977, page 16A
"Fantasia," Walt Disney's classic wedding of animation and classical music, has been returned to Utah and is playing at the Regency Theater in full stereophonic sound, beginning tonight.
This represents the first stereophonic sound for the picture in Utah history. Because of the special technique involved in the presentation, an exclusive engagement was contracted for in this return of the film.
Besides the 6:45 and 9:15 performances, a late showing at 11:45 p.m. has been arranged for tonight.
Walt Disney always considered "Fantasia" as his only major box office flop. It was when he first released the film 39 years ago. It failed to make money during three rereleases, then about 10 years ago attracted a new audience because of the nature of the colors and the music. Since the reissue of 10 years ago, the film went into the black and has been a moneymaker.
Another new first-run movie opening in Salt Lake tonight is "Damnation Alley," which has scenes made in Salt Lake.
